Yes, I did have an idea to introduce my fonts by designing embroidered name patches for them. 👀

And now I’m super excited to share them with you! Lol.

Please enjoy these colorful mockups introducing some of my favorite fonts.

Design Process:

I started with designing in Adobe Illustrator. I like bold contrasts and bright, vibrant colors. I really enjoy how the thick line and simple shapes of the badges mix with the fonts.

Then I started experimenting with mock-ups. I saw this beautiful green table top this week and really loved the texture and colors, so I incorporated different bold color terrazzo into the designs.

I was able to explain the look I wanted by sharing my vector designs and a detailed description of what I wanted to create using Adobe Firefly. These were so fun to make!

Next, I brought them into Photoshop to make any last edits.

And finally, getting to share them with you! This was my first time trying out Adobe Firefly, so I’m still learning, but oh wow is it fun to make mockups with.

GoDaddy Studio is their design platform and app, where creators and small businesses can create professional visual content, like social media posts, logos, videos, and marketing materials.

And now, three Studio Funshop fonts are officially available inside the app! Cool!

Here’s a quick look at them:

Handmade Sans

This one is a hand-drawn sans inspired by all the good vintage things: old labels, imperfect printing, and retro film titles. It works really well for logos, display type, quotes, and anything that needs a handmade touch.

Goops

Goops is my playful, Y2K-inspired bubble font. It has a bit of texture, some goopy charm, and lots of personality. Great for branding, stickers, art, quotes, and fun display moments.

Mixed

Mixed is an uppercase, extra-textured hand-lettered font inspired by distressed retro signs and imperfect printing. It’s great for headlines, logos, posters, and anything that needs a bold, handmade look.

If you’re already using GoDaddy Studio, you can now drop these fonts right into your projects. And if you prefer using them in other design software, all three are also available in my shop.

I always love seeing my fonts pop up out in the wild, and this one feels especially fun.

Little Beast is a pet brand known for its super nice, stylish, high-quality clothes and accessories for you and your pet.

I am in love with their brand style and product designs; they often use bright colors and modern, bold shapes in what they create.

They posted an Instagram series using Puffie font featuring their signature Little Beast Carrier, a bag with a soft, puffy look. I was so excited to see this because I think Puffie, one of my bubble-style fonts, complements their bag and overall style wonderfully.

Kind of a perfect puffy match.

Little Beast has a very playful, stylish brand identity. Even their business name is fun, as I am now thinking lovingly of all the dogs I know as little beasts, which makes me giggle.

The soft, cloud-like shapes of Puffie’s letters feel right at home next to the padded, cozy shape of the bag. Both feel cute but still modern.

Puffie was originally inspired by puffer jackets. I wanted to create a bubbly, hand-drawn font with personality that still felt structured and thoughtfully designed.

Puffie’s appearance in Little Beast’s Instagram series emphasizes the playful, soft, bold, friendly energy they already have in their branding. Studio Funshop fonts lean into personality and texture, which is why they often pair nicely with brands that want a little character in their visuals.

I love looking at old book covers; they always have the best font and title designs, and are just super beautiful. That’s why I’m super excited to share this new font that was inspired by this love of mine...

Meet Storybook!

Every letter was drawn by hand, blending soft calligraphic movement with modern hand-lettering for a look that feels elegant but still approachable.

The goal was to give Storybook a timeless feel. It fits somewhere between script and serif, giving it a distinctive personality that works beautifully for book covers, titles, quotes, and nostalgic designs that need a little magic without feeling overdone.

It was a fun experience creating and experimenting with different swashes, especially for the capital letters. Some of my favorites include the A, L, and W.

Here are a couple behind the scenes photos as I created the font. It started with sketching out the letters on my iPad.

The next font I am leaning toward making is an imperfect, hand-drawn font inspired by Neo-Grotesque Sans-Serif fonts (with different weights). Or possibly a handwriting font that includes an oblique and a Reverse-oblique/Backslanted style.

Hello Everyone! Here’s another from my Fonts In Use series I’m sharing right now.

I love seeing my fonts show up in unexpected places, especially when they’re paired with something as fun as pets.

Edgard & Cooper, a pet food brand known for its colorful packaging, playful voice, and wholesome ingredients, recently shared an Instagram series using Imperfect.

Their brand uses friendly, modern design, so seeing them mix polished pet photography with a relaxed handwritten font felt like such a nice fit.

The series features adorable, almost editorial-style pet portraits.

The pet photos look polished and expressive, and Imperfect font used for the quotes adds a warm, casual touch that makes the posts feel more human.

One of my favorites is a cat named Mr. Butters saying, “My taste buds have the zoomies right now.” Another good one is “Should’ve asked for a doggy bag. But it was soooooo goooood.” from Pierre the dog. The combination of classy photos and a handwriting-style font gives the posts a really fun personality. The unexpected reviews from pets definitely made me smile.

Imperfect is a handwritten sans serif I drew by hand, including alternates to keep it feeling loose and natural. It was inspired by things I love like vintage imperfect printing, doodling, and handwritten notes. It works really well for logos, quotes, titles, and anything that needs a handmade touch.

I was super excited to see Edgard & Cooper use it in their Instagram series because their brand blends professionalism with playfulness. It’s a really nice balance that I think is a great fit for the Imperfect font.

I’ve been wanting to share more behind-the-scenes looks at how my handmade fonts show up in real projects, and this one is a great example of a typeface doing what it was designed to do.

I created the font, interior illustrations, and hand-lettering used throughout the book Practices for Embodied Living: Experiencing the Wisdom of Your Body by Hillary L. McBride, published by Baker Publishing Group.

The art direction for this project was very thoughtful. They wanted illustrations and lettering that showed bodies in a variety of forms, with a slightly fantastical quality, but still grounded, imperfect, and relatable. The font needed to have the same kind of honesty and warmth. Flowing and a little messy in the best way.

That’s where Notie came in.

It is a handwriting font I built to feel like personal notes you would scribble in a book or journal. Relaxed, lightly textured, and full of small quirks that make handwriting feel charming instead of polished. Every letter was drawn by hand, and I added alternates to help the type feel more natural when letters repeat in longer phrases. It is simple on purpose, but still adds personality to headlines, annotations, and little moments of emphasis throughout the book.

In Practices for Embodied Living, Notie pairs really well with the flowing and varied body shapes, and hand-lettered chapter titles, adding a warm and personal touch. The goal was to make the book feel inviting, like a companion, and Notie helped create that voice.

If you want a handwriting font that feels friendly and flexible, and works well for notes, headlines, quotes, or anything that needs a textured, written look, Notie might be a nice fit.

And, I’ve been thinking about new fonts I want to create.

I have some ideas in mind, like a Storybook or Fairytale-inspired font, or a ribbon one, or an imperfect geometric sans font. All will come eventually, it’s just a matter of picking which to do first. Here is some of the inspo I’ve collected for the storybook font. I’d like to do a modern take on this classic style. I’ll share the process here once I have more to share.

Craft of Holidays Past: Pretending Oranges and Guava are Pumpkins

Wasn’t able to get pumpkins for Halloween this year… but I made do with oranges and guava. Here’s how they turned out. A bonus was getting to snack on oranges as we carved and painted. The guava “painted pumpkin” was inspired by vintage Halloween illustrations.

Made Some cute gnomes / Santas, mushrooms, and more.

I recycled some paper bags to make paper doll chains. It was a nice break from the computer. For the style, I was kind of going for a mix of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and just cozy winter things, so I could keep them up for as long as possible.

My newest font is Organic Hand, a Semi-script font that blends the simplicity of print with the flow of script. Casual, natural, and quietly expressive. 

Now, here are some of my thoughts on font pairing. Let me know what you think.

A Simple, Fun Font Pairing Guide

Ever spend way too long picking fonts?

Same. But once you get how contrast and rule-breaking work, it actually gets a lot more easy and fun.

Font pairing can be tricky. You look at two fonts and think, “These should work together,” and then… they don’t. For me, it’s something you only get better at by messing around and seeing what feels right.

Here’s how I work with fonts.

Start with curiosity

The best advice I can give: be curious. Try stuff. Mix fonts you normally wouldn’t. Play with scale, weight, and color. You’ll start to notice patterns: what feels balanced, what feels off, what actually surprises you in a good way. Sometimes the best designs come from total accidents that just happen to click.

Learn the rules

Typography has its official rules, and they’re good to know. Basically, give each font a clear job (headline vs. sub-header vs. body copy), and keep it to two or three fonts max. Also, make sure it’s readable.

An example of breaking the rules

Legibility is important… unless you’re using a font for creative or artistic expression. For example, the 1960s psychedelic art movement, especially poster design, had a wild, trippy approach to typography. Often, the fonts were hard to read. The distortion wasn’t a mistake; it was intentional, designed to attract the counterculture crowd .. young people into rock music, freedom of expression, anti-establishment ideas, and the psychedelic experience itself. The designs weren’t just meant to be seen; they were meant to be an experience, reflecting the same surreal, reality-bending feelings as the psychedelics that inspired them.

So for these psychedelic posters, immediate readability wasn’t the goal.

When legibility is needed

Other times, readability is essential, like when you need viewers to understand something quickly. Think advertisements, articles, website sections, or signage. Road signs, for example, must be legible from a distance to convey messages safely and accurately.

Key rules that make text legible or easy to read

Contrast

Make sure there’s enough contrast between your text and background so the words actually stand out.

Size

Keep your font size big enough to read comfortably, whether it’s on a screen or in print.

Spacing

Give your text room to breathe. Space out lines, letters, and words so nothing feels cramped.

Typography

Pick fonts with clean, clear shapes. Save the fancy stuff for headlines, not body text.

Layout

Stick with an easy-to-follow alignment, like left-aligned. Centered or right-aligned text can look cool for shorter copy, but for long text blocks, it’s harder to read.

Now for pairing fonts

Often, the main thing is contrast.

You want your fonts to look different enough that each has a function or hierarchy, but not so different that they feel like they’re from completely separate worlds. Big vs. small, heavy vs. light, classic vs. modern. Contrast gives your design hierarchy, emotion, balance, and rhythm.

Key rules for font pairing

Mix font styles

Pair a serif with a sans-serif, or a script with a sans-serif, or a reverse contrast slab-serif with a lighter traditional sans-serif. There are many, many possibilities. Mix and match to create an appealing contrast. It’s one of the easiest ways to make your design feel balanced and interesting.

Contrast weights

Use different weights to make text distinct without or without changing the font family. For example, a bold heading paired with a light body font naturally guides the reader’s eye from big to small, dark to light.

Avoid conflict

Don’t pick fonts that are too similar, it can be confusing and look like a mistake. Similarly, avoid fonts that clash too much, like two ultra-creative display fonts with lots of details. Sometimes this leads to them fighting for attention and makes your design feel chaotic. (That said, if a little chaos is intentional for your design or brand, go for it.)

You can use font families

A safe way to keep harmony is to stick with fonts from the same family. For example, an Extra Bold and Regular version of the same typeface usually pair well, creating a unified, stable feel.

Build hierarchy

Most designs need a primary font, usually the headline. Then use smaller, lighter fonts for body text. Size and weight differences guide the reader and make content easier to follow. Our eyes naturally go to the boldest, brightest thing first, then move down the hierarchy, which is a handy tool when pairing fonts.

Keep it readable and minimal

Limit yourself to two or three fonts to avoid clutter. Make sure your text is readable at its intended size. Test pairings in context. What looks good on your screen might feel different or be unreadable in another scale.

Have fun breaking the rules

Once you understand the basics of type design and font pairing, experiment. Try pairing two decorative fonts or mixing an ultra-fancy script with a rough, plain sans-serif. Maybe make the line spacing super tight and leave no breathing space along the edges so the design feels bold, condensed, and heavy. Maybe it seems like a bad idea, but sometimes it works. The key is intention. Break rules to add something meaningful, not just to be rebellious.

Breaking rules with purpose looks cool. You can create energy, tension, or something unexpected that makes people stop and look.

Final thoughts

Font pairing isn’t about memorizing rules or chasing trends. It’s about understanding the basics, trusting your gut, and being willing to play. Learn the rules well enough to break them confidently. That’s usually when the best stuff happens.
